Bruins D Ward suffers throat injury

Boston Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward left Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins early in the second period with a throat injury.
Ward was attended to by Boston's trainer and retreated to the locker room after a collision with Pittsburgh defenseman Sergei Gonchar at 4:05 of the middle period. As Ward approached Gonchar, the All-Star blue-liner raised his arms, subsequently hitting the Bruin in the neck.
After being checked over in the locker room, Ward was taken to a local hospital for further examination. He will remain under observation overnight.
"He's obviously in stable condition, but they just want to play it safe and keep him here for 24 hours before they release him," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "It was a stick or glove to the throat."
The situation was a frightening one for the Bruins, as it came just three days after Florida's Richard Zednik nearly had his carotid artery severed when slashed by the skate blade of teammate Olli Jokinen.
Boston captain Zdeno Chara, who was the first player to come to Ward's aid, stated that he heard choking sounds and believed his fellow defenseman was gasping for air.
Julien was not aware of the specifics but agreed with the decision to have Ward remain hospitalized.
"All I know is that he was coughing up some blood, and that's why they sent him to the hospital and have him under observation and stuff like that, just to make sure everything is under control," Julien said.
Drafted fifth overall by Winnipeg in 1991, Ward has recorded four goals and five assists in 44 games this season - his second with Boston.
A native of Windsor, Ontario, Ward won Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998 and also helped the Carolina Hurricanes to the championship in 2006.
