With 4:43 left in a frustrating 2-1 loss to the Canadiens last night, Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward was blindsided by an unprovoked elbow to the head delivered by Francis Bouillon. The Habs defenseman came out of the penalty box, skated in behind Ward and made the hit far away from the puck.
Ward fell to the ice, where he remained face down for a few minutes. A stretcher was brought on the ice, but Ward eventually stood up with the aid of teammates and was helped off to the locker room.
After the game, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli was asked if Bouillon’s hit would warrant a suspension.
“Oh, yes, I think so,” said Chiarelli.
There was no immediate word on Ward’s condition, although coach Claude Julien suggested it was a concussion. The team already was without center Patrice Bergeron due to a similar incident.
“From what we saw it seemed like an elbow to the head,” said Julien. “We haven’t received a final diagnosis. Obviously he got the elbow in the head, and we know what happens from there.”
It wasn’t a nice sight for Bruins players having another teammate down and motionless just two weeks after Bergeron’s frightening injury.
“It was a little bit of deja vu when he wasn’t moving,” said goalie Tim Thomas [stats]. “The way he twitched when Donny (DelNegro), our trainer, touched him, scared me. Because that could be a sign that he was possibly unconscious.”
